When it comes to Halloween, there’s always that one person who takes costumes a little too far.
The celebrity that holds this year’s title is none other than Julianne Hough, who apparently thought no one would be offended if she slapped on some dark makeup to impersonate Orange Is the New Black‘s Crazy Eyes (played by actress Uzo Aduba) for a recent Halloween party.
Well, she was dead wrong.
After massive backlash, the Dancing With the Stars alum presumably realized that blackface is never, ever appropriate in any day and age and apologized on her Twitter, writing:
I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.
Seriously, this is why those “we’re a culture, not a costume” posters still exist.
